Robert Eugene Derby, 71, of Sweet Home died Thursday in Twin Oaks Care Center.

Born in Rapid city, S.D., to Harold E. and Alice G. Loban Derby, he graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1949 and was a Marine veteran of the Korean War.

He logged for many years and lived in Washington, California and Oregon. He enjoyed mining, rockhounding and searching for exotic woods.

Survivors include his sons, Mike of Napa, Calif., and Russell of Rogue River; daughter, Deanna Dee Derby of California; sister, Betty Alice Wilkening of Eugene; brother, Patrick Derby of Hampton, Va.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in Gilliland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel.
