SALEM — Max Chaney and the Corvallis High football team bounced back from last week's 14-12 loss to Sprague with a solid 10-3 victory over South Salem on Friday in Valley League action.
The Corvallis defense held the Saxons (2-3) to a Matt Wilson field goal midway through the fourth quarter. The Spartans defense has allowed just three touchdowns in the past four games as they improved to 4-1 and are tied with McKay for third. The Spartans host McKay on Thursday.
"The defense played great again," CHS coach Chris McGowan said. "We had a great game plan and executed well."
South got the ball back down 10-3 after the Spartans were forced to punt and made a drive before the defense stiffened and the CHS offense ran out the clock.
It was a nice way to bounce back.
"I feel like we play hard every week," McGowan said. "South Salem is a good football team. I don't think we were overconfident and to get a win, and a close win, is a great deal."
Chaney recovered two fumbles and scored from less than a yard out in the third quarter as the Spartans built a 10-0 lead. Chaney, who saw his first extended action at quarterback, completed 4 of 14 passes for 64 yards.
Kurtis Magee gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead at halftime when he knocked through a 30-yard field goal three seconds into the second quarter.
Jarren Simmons was the workhorse in the backfield. The junior carried 19 times for 118 yards for the Spartans.
"He played really well," McGowan said. "They kind of stopped the run early and we figured out our blocking schemes better and freed him up to run. I feel confident with all three (backs) running the ball. Jarren did a great job."
Jake Roy had seven tackles and Aaron McKimmy added six solo tackles and a sack for the Spartans.
The victory was the fourth this season for the Spartans, the most since 1992. It was also the Spartans' first win over South Salem since 1988, when they defeated the Saxons 20-7.
The Spartans return home to face McKay, a 27-20 loser against Sprague. McNary and Sprague are 5-0, with the Spartans and Royal Scots tied with four games left. The top three teams in the Valley League advance to the playoffs.
