Spartans land five on all-state football squad

Mid-Valley Sports

Corvallis High's most success football season since 1986 keeps getting better.

The Spartans — who reached the playoffs and earned their first winning season since 1992, finished second in the Valley League, and won its playoff opener — landed five players on the 4A all-state football team.

Valley League defensive player of the year Jake Roy was a second-team selection at linebacker. Roy's interception in the closing seconds secured the Spartans 20-17 victory over Summit in the first round of the playoffs.

Kurtis Magee, whose 50-yard field goal against McNary is believed to be a school record, was a third-team selection as a kicker. The senior also earned third-team honors as a defensive back.

Magee's kicking mate, senior punter Cory Dickson, also earned third-team honors. Senior defensive lineman Mike Reeves and senior tight end Aaron McKimmy were honorable mention selections.

McKay senior Josh Riddell was the only other Valley League player to be selected on the first, second or third teams on offense or defense.

McKay's Anthony Marin (defensive line), McNary's Taylor Hermes (linebacker) and J.J. McCrae (defensive back) and Sprague's Jon Richards (linebacker) and Ryan Marshall (defensive back) were honorable mention picks on defense.

Sprague's Cody Richards (guard), Ryan Servias (tackle) and Marshall (wide receiver) and McKay's Corey Perkins (center) and Marin (tackle) were honorable mention picks on offense.

Bend running back Matt Sieverson was named the offensive player of the year, and North Medford lineman David Faaeteet was the defensive player of the year. Tigard's Frank Geske was the coach of the year after leading the Tigers to the state title.
