January trial set for 12 charged

BROWNSVILLE — Twelve people have been indicted in federal court in connection with the bust of a meth "superlab" north of Brownsville in May.

Federal authorities raided a house on Sheep Head Road on May 26, seizing meth-making supplies that showed a lab capable of producing 90 pounds of pure meth in three days had been operating in the two-bedroom manufactured home. It was one of the largest meth busts in Oregon history.

At the time, 15 people were arrested in connection with the case, most of them Mexican citizens living in Salem.

Here is updated information about the arrests and charges in connection with the case:

THE DEFENDANTS

• Arturo Arevalo-Cuevas, aka Hector Torres-Lopez

• Miguel Silva Chava, aka Kiwi, Pinguino, Jose Antonia Duarte Talavera, Marco Antonio Arevalos-Arevalo, Miguel Chava Silva, Jose Chavez, Jose Artemio Chavez Orozoco, Jose Pantosa-Soria, and Sabino Guillen-Figueroa

• Victor Manuel Zamora-Arrellano, aka Puma

• Sonia Violet Garcia

• Venancio Villalobos-Soto, aka Tony and Pariente

• Adriana Arevalo-Cuevas, aka Adriana Mercedes Arevalo-Cuevas

• Irania Arevalo-Cuevas

• Minerva Arevalo-Cuevas, aka Nena

• Everardo Arevalo-Cuevas, aka Andres Arevalo-Cuevas, Andreas Ortiz-Morales and Ignacio Sosa-Savala

• Pedro Chavez-Minera

• Miguel Ortiz-Chavez

• Ramon Soto-Chavez

THE CHARGES

All are charged with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

Venancio Villalobos-Soto is also charged with distribution of methamphetamine.

All have pleaded not guilty. All have been provided with lawyers if they could not hire their own.

CUSTODY STATUS

All are in custody, with the exception of Sonia Garcia, who has been released, and Victor Zamora-Arrellano, who is still wanted.

THE TRIAL

A four-week trial has been scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Jan. 10, 2006, in the U.S. District Court in Portland, courtroom 9A, before Judge Garr M. King.

U.S. attorneys Geoffrey A. Barrow and Jennifer J. Martin are prosecuting the case.

FORFEITURES

If convicted, the defendants will be required to forfeit the following property, which the government claims was used or gained in the course of criminal activity:

• One fully loaded SKS rifle.

• One fully loaded Beretta Model 12-gauge shotgun.

• One magazine with .30 ammunition.

• One .32-caliber magnum 2-shot Davis Industry handgun.

• One box of .22-caliber long rifle ammunition.

• One magazine with rounds of ammunition.

• Two gun magazines, boxes of .42-caliber ammunition, loose bullets.

• 9-millimeter magazine with 10 rounds.

• One fully loaded Smith and Wesson .40-caliber pistol.

• One Ruger P-89.

• $162,279 in U.S. currency.

• A 1999 Lincoln Navigator.
