To celebrate student involvement on campus and in the Corvallis community, Oregon State University will host a Rock-4-Activism concert Friday, Oct. 7, in the Memorial Union Quad.
“It’s trying to get students to be active, whether that’s in voting or letting their voices be heard,” said Amy Ostrom, Memorial Union President.
The free event, co-sponsored by the Associated Students of OSU and the Memorial Union Program Council, begins at 6 p.m. Local bands Melodious Funk, Stairway Denied and Amadan will lend their talents. Full Sail Brewing will provide the beer garden, and barbeque from Bombs Away Cafe will also be available.
There will be a drawing for prizes, as well as information about ways for students to get involved with ASOSU and the MUPC. Concert goers are encouraged to bring a can of food to donate to the ASOSU Student Committee on Hunger and Poverty.
Melodious Funk is an experimental band made up of OSU music department alumni. It draws inspiration from Latin, classical and rock influences. The group has Sam Kincaid on guitar and vocals, Dustin Stallings on bass and vocals, Jed Bogan on keyboard and vocals, Lance Lacey on drumset and Harvey Sellers IV on percussion and vocals. They frequently play at Bombs Away Cafe.
Stairway Denied is a Led Zeppelin tribute band. The group consists of drummer Chris Harver, guitarists Brian Hunter and Dylan Nelson, bassist Dustin Stallings and vocalist Noah Stroup.
“They’re really quite phenomenal in how much they achieve sounding like the original band,” said Darrin Crescenzi, MUPC concerts director.
Amadan offers Irish punk-rock music infused with unexpected instruments ranging from the spoons to a didgeridoo to a spunky fiddle. The six-person band consists of Eric Tonsfeldt on lead vocals and guitar, Andy Gross on didgeridoo and background vocals, Mike Morrow on doumbek, drumset and background vocals, Kevin Pardew on 6-string bass and background vocals, Naoyuki Ochiai on accordion and fiddle and Jeremy Bauer on spoons, banjo, whistle, mouth and snare drum.
Amadan regularly plays at such local venues as the Fox & Firkin and Platinum. The band also takes the stage at pubs and clubs around the Northwest. It has two full-length CDs n “Hell-Bent 4 Victory” and “Sons of Liberty.”
“Amadan is one of the most accomplished and energetic bands that the state has,” Crescenzi said. “If you haven’t seen them live, this is a wonderful chance to go to one of the most entertaining concerts you could ever see.”
