OSU IN BRIEF
Corvallis Gazette-Times
Ninth-ranked California brought a probable close to Oregon State’s women’s soccer season on Sunday as the Golden Bears defeated OSU 4-0 at Lorenz Field in a Pacific-10 Conference game.
While the Beavers (10-8-1, 3-5-1 Pac-10) won 10 games for the second straight year, they finished eighth in the conference and will likely come up short in their bid to reach the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Bears (14-3-2, 7-1-1) are certain to be in the tournament, which begins next weekend.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Cal,” coach Steve Fennah said. “In my opinion, they’re the best Pac-10 team. This was another game where things could have been different because we missed on some chances we had. That has been the story all season long.”
Cal’s Liz Eisenberg scored the only goal of the first half at 5:37. At the top of the box, senior forward Dania Cabello attempted to kick the ball toward the goal, but it deflected off an OSU defender to Eisenberg, who had an easy shot from eight yards out.
Eisenberg scored again early in the second half. Junior forward Julia Schnugg sent in a short cross from the right side. OSU junior goalkeeper Amy Johnson knocked it down, but Eisenberg pounced on the rebound and scored for her 10th goal of the year at 49:49.
Eisenberg also had an assist on the Bears’ third goal.
OSU was outshot, 13-5. The Beavers, and sophomore forward Jodie Taylor specifically, had two excellent chances early in the game after Cal had taken its 1-0 lead. Had either gone in, it might have been a different game.
