Athletic events highlight Dad’s Weekend

Movies, a car show, tours, tournaments and athletic events are among the highlights of Oregon State University’s Dad’s Weekend 2005.

Many activities are free during this weekend’s annual event, in which OSU students are encouraged to invite family members for a campus visit.

Activities begin early Friday and continue through Sunday evening. The campus Memorial Union is the focal point for most events. For information, contact OSU’s Memorial Union Program Council at 737-6872 or see the Web site at http://

Among the events scheduled are:

Friday

All day: Dads admitted free to Dixon Recreation Center when accompanied by an OSU student; Valley Library self-guided tours.

10 a.m.: Pottery sale, Memorial Union student lounge, through 3 p.m.

1 p.m.: Hinsdale wave research laboratory open house, through

4 p.m.; dads admitted free to Craft Center with OSU student, through 10 p.m.

4 p.m.: Welcome Dad, event information, souvenir sales, MU Concourse, through 6 p.m.

5 p.m.: Stand-up dinner, LaSells Stewart Center, $10.

6:30 p.m.: Comedy show with Jim Breuer, LaSells Stewart Center, encore performance at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $28. For information, call 541-737-6872.

7 p.m.: Women’s exhibition basketball game, Gill Coliseum; free screening of PG-13-rated 1987 feature film, “La Bamba,” chronicling the life of singer Ritchie Valens, MU Journey Room.

9 p.m.: Free screening of R-rated 2004 feature film, “Motorcycle Diaries,” detailing Che Guevara’s motorcycle trip across South America, MU Journey Room.

Saturday

All day: Dads admitted free to Dixon Recreation Center when accompanied by an OSU student; Valley Library self-guided tours.

8:30 a.m.: Three-on-three basketball tournament, Dixon Recreation Center, sign-ups, information MU Room 103 for teams up to five players, registration at 7:30 a.m. at Dixon.

9 a.m.: Eight ball tournament: double elimination, MU Recreation Center, through 1 p.m.

10 a.m.: Bowling tournament, MU Recreation Center, through

2 p.m., tours of Radiation Center, through noon; back massage, sign up MU Room 103, $15, through 3, Dad & I photos, MU room 109, $10 per photo, through 3 p.m.

11 a.m.: Soda fountain treats, MU lounge, through 3 p.m.; dads admitted to Craft Center free with OSU student, through 5 p.m.; hot rod car show, McAlexander field house, through 3 p.m.; ultimate tailgater: MU quad, barbecue, beer garden, music; Dad & I look-alike contest: MU quad, sign-ups at 10:30 a.m.

11:30 a.m.: Who’s Your Daddy game show: MU quad, sign-ups in MU room 103.

1 p.m.: Hinsdale wave research laboratory open house, through

4 p.m.

1:30 p.m.: Multicultural tailgater with food, music and games, El Centro Cultural Cesar Chavez.

3:30 p.m.: OSU football vs. Stanford, Reser Stadium; game televised in MU commons.

7 p.m.: Free screening of PG-13-rated 1987 feature film, “La Bamba,” chronicling the life of singer Ritchie Valens. MU Journey Room.

9 p.m.: Free screening of R-rated 2004 feature film, “Motorcycle Diaries,” detailing Che Guevara’s motorcycle trip across South America. MU Journey Room; Rock and glow bowling for dads and students, MU Recreation Center, through midnight.

Sunday

All day: Dads admitted free to Dixon Recreation Center when accompanied by an OSU student; Valley Library self-guided tours.

10 a.m.: Beaver brunch bingo, MU ballroom.

11 a.m.: Dads admitted free to Craft Center with OSU student, through 5 p.m.
