OSU’s Buck, Gunderson on Brook’s watch list

Oregon State pitchers Dallas Buck and Kevin Gunderson are among 120 players on the 2006 watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year.

A right-hander, Buck earned a number of All-America honors in 2005, going 12-1 with one save and a 2.09 ERA. Gunderson was a first-team Pacific-10 Conference all-star and went 6-4 with a school-record 14 saves and a 2.76 ERA.

The Wallace Watch will be trimmed to 12 semi-finalists by late May. Then the selection committee will narrow the list to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals. The winner will be announced later at an awards banquet in Lubbock, Texas.

The award is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. After playing two years in the Texas organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 1984 and fought the disease until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.
