FULLERTON, Calif. n Oregon State heavyweight Ty Watterson recorded his third pin in his last four matches as the Beavers beat Cal State-Fullerton 22-13 in Pacific-10 wrestling Tuesday night at Titan Gym. OSU 157-pounder Tony Hook picked up a win to move within one victory of a spot on the Beavers’ all-time career top 50.
Oregon State (3-1-1 overall, 2-0 Pacific-10) visits 20th-ranked Cal Poly today at 7 p.m., then returns home Friday to wrestle Nebraska-Kearney at 5 p.m. and Wyoming at 7 p.m. at Gill Coliseum.
Against CSUF (0-5, 0-4), the Beavers won six of 10 matches and also picked up bonus points with a major decision by 174-pounder Jeremy Larson and an injury default for 197-pounder Travis Gardner.
“It was a good meet for us to get ready for Cal Poly,” OSU coach Joe Wells said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
Watterson, ranked 16th nationally in the National Wrestling Coaches Association/InterMat poll that was released Tuesday, pinned Matt Methling in 1 minute, 56 seconds. Watterson is now 16-6 with seven pins this season.
“Ty did exactly what he should have,” Wells said. “He put him down, turned him and pinned him.”
Hook, who remained 17th in this week’s national rankings, took a 7-3 decision over Bryan Tice. Hook, who improved to 11-6 with two pins this season, has a career record of 63-40 and will move into a tie for 50th on OSU’s list of career victory leaders with his next win.
Larson took an 18-7 major decision over Ian Murphy for his seventh win in his last nine matches. He has three major decisions in that time. Larson is 13-8 this season.
“Jeremy did a great job,” Wells said. “He put pressure on their guy right away. He went to the legs and knocked him down a couple times in the first period, then put pressure on him the whole match and was just one takedown away from a technical fall.”
CSUF led 9-4 going into the 197-pound match, but the Titans’ Chris Chambers was unable to continue against OSU’s Gardner and the injury default gave the Beavers a 10-9 lead.
