SALEM — Kelley Wirth, who resigned from the Legislature in November following her arrest on a drug charge, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Wirth filed Oct. 14, joining the stampede of Americans who sought to have their debts wiped clean before tougher bankruptcy laws went into effect Oct. 17.
It will take a few more months for Wirth to get her debts lifted because creditors have until March 20 to file claims verifying that Wirth owes them money, the Statesman Journal newspaper reported.
Wirth, a Corvallis Democrat, saw her legislative career spiral downward on Sept. 6, when she was struck by a driver who claimed her boyfriend had an affair with Wirth.
The driver, Lisa Temple, was arrested on assault and attempted-murder charges. Salem police later arrested Wirth on a charge of methamphetamine possession after searching her car.
Wirth lost her main income source when she resigned from the House. She claimed debts of $92,027 but itemized only $44,327 of it, mostly to banks and credit-card companies.
Wirth claimed only $5,395 worth of personal belongings, with her most valuable asset being the $4,000 she listed in her Public Employees Retirement System account.
