OSU golfers tied for 13th

Corvallis Gazette-Times

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii n The Oregon State men’s golf team finished the first round of the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate in a three-way tie for 13th place on Wednesday. The second round of the 21-team event will be played today; the 54-hole event ends on Friday.

The Beavers shot a 1-under-par 283 at the par-71 Waikoloa Village Golf Course, leaving them three strokes out of the top 10. Georgia Tech leads with a 16-under-par 268.

Alex Williams shot a 33-33n-66 and is tied for fourth place. It tied for the fifth-lowest round in school history. Vincent Johnson shot a 3-under-par 68 and is tied for 11th.

“We got off to a great start, 9-under through the first five holes before the wind picked up. We were 5-over on our last five holes. As the week goes on the scores should get lower,” coach Brian Watts said. “I feel comfortable with where the guys are at.

“We just have to figure out a way to get the ball in the hole a little sooner. Our ball-striking was poor today. The scores are fairly tight, so if we have a good round tomorrow than we should be in a good position going into Friday. We need to not let the wind dictate our game.

“Alex (Williams) had a great day. Vincent (Johnson) also played very well. Alex hit 15 greens and gave himself a lot of birdie opportunities. He’s competing against the best in the country and played really well. He’s got a lot experience playing on Bermuda greens and it shows.”
