Nash Hall to receive earthquake help

Oregon State University’s Nash Hall will receive $1.6 million for earthquake readiness upgrades, thanks to a Federal Emergency Management Grant.

The grant to the Oregon University System and the state Department of Geology and Mineral Industries also provides $1 million to Western Oregon University for upgrades to its humanities and social sciences building.

Called an earthquake building rehabilitation grant, the FEMA funding provides 75 percent of the projected $2.6 million in total costs. OUS will provide the remaining 25 percent, the match required by FEMA.

OSU’s Nash Hall was designed in 1968, before stricter building codes were put in place to protect buildings from earthquake damage. OSU will be issuing a request in April for project bids.

OUS and the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries are assessing all buildings on the state’s seven public university campuses. Each building will receive a score, based on how at-risk it is for earthquake damage.
