OSU’s Varsity 8 defeats Boston U

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — Oregon State women’s Varsity 8 defeated Boston University on Sunday at the Windermere Cup regatta. OSU’s time over the 2,000-meter course was 6:40.50; the Terriers finished in 6:49.17.

“We rowed very well,” coach Charlie Owen said. “We got a great start that really helped. As the race went on we made some good moves and got a few more seats on Boston that helped us down the course .

“This was a very big win for us. It is so important to get wins against teams outside of our region, especially programs that are at the caliber of Boston. This victory will hopefully help us down the road and help get us into the NCAA’s (championship races).”

The Beavers also defeated Syracuse and lost to Virginia on Saturday.

The men’s Varsity 8 lost to Yale on Sunday and to Trinity College and Navy on Saturday.

“We were just terrible,” coach Fred Honebein said. “We didn’t execute at all. We never found our niche in any of the races. It was a very disappointing competition.

“We came into this event with big hopes to compete at a high level and show what we can do and we didn’t do that. The reality was that we didn’t perform on the level that I think that we can.”

Both teams resume action Saturday and Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic.

Men’s golf holds second

EUGENE — The Oregon State men’s golf team stands in second place after two rounds of the Oregon Duck Invitational on Monday, while the OSU women’s golf team is in fourth place after frost and darkness shortened the day to one complete round.

The men, competing at the par-72 Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, led the field after the first round after firing a 3-under-par 285. The Beavers followed that up with an even-par 288 for a total of 573, but dropped into second place behind 24th-ranked San Diego State, which shot 566.

The women, competing at the par-72 Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, got a late start because of frost. Play was called due to darkness with about five holes left in the second round. OSU shot a 310 in the first round, 10 strokes behind the leader, Idaho.
