Beavers’ offense dries up in loss

Oregon State musters two home runs against San Francisco

Corvallis Gazette-Times

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Oregon State seniors Bill Rowe and Shea McFeely homered but that was all the offense the 15th-ranked Beavers mustered on Wednesday in an 8-2 nonleague baseball loss to the University of San Francisco at Skyline Junior College.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for OSU (16-8) and gave it a split on a swing through Northern California. The Beavers defeated Pacific 6-4 in Stockton on Tuesday.

Wednesday’s game was moved to Skyline JC in San Bruno and the start was moved up 90 minutes because of unplayable conditions at USF’s Benedetti Diamond. The Dons (17-12) won their sixth game in a row, and 12th in their last 13.

OSU sophomore right-hander Mike Stutes took the loss. Two of the four runs Stutes allowed in five innings were unearned. He had five strikeouts and surrendered five hits and two walks.

The Beavers got within 4-1 when Rowe homered to lead off the top of the sixth inning. It was his first home run at OSU. He hit 10 in three years at UC-Santa Barbara, where he played before transferring to OSU for his senior season.

USF answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning against reliever Jon Koller to make it 7-1. Mitchell Bialosky’s two-run homer capped the scoring in the inning. USF made it 8-1 when Andrew Smith homered to lead off the bottom of the seventh off right-hander Daniel Turpen.

McFeely answered with his first homer in the top of the eighth. OSU then loaded the bases with two outs but couldn’t come up with a hit to get closer.

Shortstop Darwin Barney had an infield single in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Rowe was 2-for-3, Cole Gillespie 2-for-4.

The Beavers next play a three-game series against Texas-Pan American at Goss Stadium, starting with a 4 p.m. single game on Friday. The teams then play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
