G-T, OSU honor business faculty

This year’s Corvallis Gazette-Times Faculty Leadership Award went to an Oregon State University professor who lives in a dorm.

The annual honor, presented by Gazette-Times Publisher Mike McInally, was presented to Justin Craig, an assistant professor of entrepreneurship. As faculty-in-residence at Weatherford Hall, Craig is a full-time mentor for the Austin Entrepreneurship Program’s students and is considered instrumental in building the young program’s credibility.

Craig was among eight OSU College of Business faculty honored at the college’s 2006 awards dinner Thursday in the CH2M Hill Alumni Center.

He was also the recipient of one of four Newcomb Fellowships awarded by Dean Ilene Kleinsorge. Established by OSU alum Bernie Newcomb, co-founder of E*Trade, the fellowships honor superior faculty performance. Craig was named a Newcomb fellow for his role in establishing the informal curriculum of the Austin Entrepreneurship Program.

Ray Brooks, a professor of finance, received a fellowship for his work with the Harley and Brigitte Smith Lifetime Financial Planning Contest and the Finance/Investment Club.

Malcolm Lemay, director of operations, earned a fellowship for his role in the college’s accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Lemay also won the Exemplary Service Award.

Associate marketing professor Hal Koenig and marketing professor Jim McAlexander shared a Newcomb award for establishing a student-based market research operation called the Close to the Customer Project. Their Journal of Marketing “Building Brand Community” research is among the top 10 most-cited scholarly works. Koenig also won the Outstanding Faculty Service Award.

Instructor Madeleine Romero received the Bryon L. Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognizing her exceptionally high teaching evaluations and contributions to the college.

The Excellence in Scholarship Award, recognizing academic faculty research excellence, was given to Zhaohui Wu, assistant professor of management, and David Baldridge, assistant professor of management.
