Accordions abound at River Rhythms

Albany — Those Darn Accordions will close out this summer’s River Rhythms concert series on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Monteith Riverpark in Albany.

The free concert starts at 7 p.m., with food booths opening at 5 p.m.

Concertgoers with chairs can begin staking out their seating anytime the day of the concert. Those sitting on blankets in front of the stage, however, cannot look for places to sit until 4 p.m.

Children’s pre-concert activities begin at 5. At this concert, children will make animal pins, air-propelled rockets and wheely-bugs.

This accordion-fueled rock ’n roll band from San Francisco squeezes out quirky, original music that chronicles life in the weird lane.

The six-piece group is fronted by lead singer and squeezebox player Paul Rogers. Joining him on the accordion and singing vocal harmonies are Carri Abrahms, Susie Davis and Suzanne Garramone.

Drummer Bill Schwartz and bass player Lewis Wallace anchor the band.

Band members make use of guitar effects pedals and amps to present a unique accordion sound.

The group’s repertoire isn’t limited to just rock. Members also perform funk, polka and swing.

Concertgoers have contributed $5,308 during the pass-the-hat portion of the evening concerts. Corporate sponsors have helped defray the cost of this year’s series sponsored by the Albany Parks and Recreation Department.
