at Beaver Classic
Corvallis Gazette-Times
For the third time this fall the Oregon State women’s cross country team came away with a first-place finish.
The latest performance came Saturday morning in OSU’s five-team Beaver Classic.
The Beavers, ranked ninth in the NCAA West Region, outscored Corban College 57-74 in the 6,000-meter race held at Avery Park and hosted by the OSU Track Club.
Since first starting a varsity program in 1975, this is the first season that Oregon State has ever won more than one invitational-type meet. In every race OSU has won this season, the Beavers have had a runner finish in the top five; Saturday, it was Holly Thompson in fifth place.
“Everyone has made a lot of improvements,” Oregon State coach Kelly Sullivan said. “They have bought into what we are trying to do; everyone is a huge part of the future for this program.”
Thompson finished in 22 minutes, 46 seconds, with teammate Rebecca Mishler following in eighth place.
Two members of Oregon State’s team running unattached were Katie Dye, who finished third in 22:36, and Abby Chesimet, who followed close behind in fourth with a time of 22:44.
“I am very pleased with how they competed today,” Sullivan said. “We competed very well and they had a great day overall. There were no disappointments from that group.”
Other teams who were represented in the Beaver Classic were Mt. Hood Community College, Willamette and Southwestern Oregon Community College.
