Men’s soccer ties with San Diego State

Corvallis Gazette-Times

The Oregon State men’s soccer team ended its losing streak in Pacific-10 Conference play on Sunday by playing to a 2-2 tie with San Diego State at Lorenz Field.

OSU (5-10-2, 0-8-1) began conference play with eight straight losses. It was poised to win Sunday after sophomore forward Robby Christner scored in the 83:55 for a 2-1 lead, but Evan Toft tied the game at 87:35.

SDSU (7-5-3, 3-2-2) earned its second tie of the weekend and played in its third straight overtime game.

“I thought the guys battled really hard,” OSU coach Dana Taylor said. “We got a lot out of our goalkeeping. Jason Mariner made a couple of very good saves.

“That built confidence for the defense. I thought our defenders battled and we never gave up.

“Having lost as many as we have in the Pac-10, and to get scored on with two minutes left to tie it, the guys kept fighting, which is a real testament to their willingness to battle through it.

“I am pleased with the guys and I thought they did everything they could do.”

SDSU scored first but OSU tied at 59:29 on a header by senior Matt Bowman off a cross by Robbie Findley following a corner kick. It was his first career goal.

There were few opportunities in overtime, but OSU got an advantage in the 99th minute.

Findley dribbled past two defenders and had a breakaway, but was taken down from behind by Ryan Reott just outside of the box.

Reott was ejected and OSU was awarded a free kick from about 22 yards, but the shot went right into the wall.

“Everyone knows we’ve had a rough season from our record,” Bowman said.

“We have played pretty well the last few games but haven’t found a way to win.

“Getting scored on with two minutes left has been the story of our season.”

The Beavers now take a week off, then end the regular season with a non-conference game at Cal State- Northridge on Oct. 31, followed by the Pac-10 finale against Washington on

Nov. 3 at Lorenz Field.

Golfers place 13th

at Stanford tournament

PALO ALTO, Calif. n The OSU women’s golf team tied with Washington for 13th on Sunday at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

The Beavers shot a 301 at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course in the final round for a 907 total; Vanderbilt won at 855 strokes.

“They really played well the first nine. It shows them what they can do,” coach Rise’ Lakowske said.

“I think we need to really work on our short game, putting in particular.

“That’s probably where the biggest difference was.

“This field last year was one of the most difficult we saw all season, so we just need to improve from here on out.

“Primarily what we’ll work on is from about 40-yards in and their shot selection from that distance and putting under pressure.”

Jessi Gebhardt finished tied for 26th (22) after a 74 on Sunday’s round to lead the Beavers.

They play in the Fouders Collegiate Showdown at Las Vegas, starting on Oct. 30, in their final fall tournament.
