SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Four players reached double figures in scoring as Oregon State broke a five-game losing streak by defeating Holy Cross 59-44 in Saturday’s consolation game of the Surf-N-Slam basketball tournament.
Oregon State (5-6) used a decisive 14-0 run to close out the first half to take control against Holy Cross (5-8).
The Crusaders failed to score a field goal over the last 5:15 of the first half, while the Beavers found their range with a barrage of 3-pointers. Freshman guard Jasmine Smith buried back-to-back shots from beyond the arc and junior Ashley Allen added one from the same spot on the left wing as OSU took a 30-18 advantage into the locker room.
Holy Cross strung together a rally in the middle of the second half and closed within 47-42 behind a 3-pointer from Bethany O’Dell with 4:43 left.
Oregon State quickly responded. Smith and Allen continued their hot shooting from 3-point range and spurred a 10-0 Beavers run and the Crusaders managed just one field goal over the remainder of the game.
OSU senior Casey Nash led all players with 16 points, while freshman Judie Lomax had 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting and Allen added 14 points and a career-best nine rebounds. Smith finished with 11 points, including a 3-for-6 clip from 3-point range.
Holy Cross had three players — Brittany Keil, Kaitlin Foley and Bethany O’Dell — score 10 points each.
Oregon State held a 28-23 rebounding edge and forced the Crusaders to commit 23 turnovers.
