CORVALLIS — One month remains until national letter of intent signing day, so the Oregon State football coaches are busy trying to finish out their recruiting class.
After the Sun Bowl victory, the coaches took about three days to rest and celebrate. There’s not much more to do in recruiting because of the work done in the fall, but the final days until coach Mike Riley has those players signed are stressful.
“That’s our main focus right now,” Riley said of recruiting. “We are about six spots away from being done, if all our commitments hold.”
Riley hopes to sign a class of about 25 players. He has five midterm junior college players or greyshirts signed, and they are expected to be enrolled at OSU this week.
He can’t talk about who has committed and are not signed, according to NCAA rules, but recruiting sites name 12-13 players expected to sign on Feb. 7.
The Beavers can go into the final month of recruiting aggressively, talking about their 10-win season and dramatic victory in the Sun Bowl.
Players unsure if OSU is the place for them may change their minds, or others who wouldn’t even give the Beavers a chance may look into them.
“We’ve formulated our list for quite a while,” Riley said. “I don’t see us adding a lot of names, but someone could pop up. We got no immediate commitments after the Sun Bowl, but a lot of responses from kids we are recruiting.”
With veteran players with significant playing time back at the 18 of the 22 regular positions, plus the place-kicker and punter, the Beavers are recruiting for the long-term. Last year there was need for help from junior college players right away, but not now.
“We’ve got spots designated at each position,” Riley said. “It’s the same old thing. We want to get depth in both lines. And then a guy or two at each position would be good. We’ve got a number of commitments that round us out. We are getting close to saying the best football player left; we are going to recruit them. We have 30 guys designated for visits with five or six spots left.”
