HILO, Hawaii — Reigning NCAA champion Oregon State swept a doubleheader from Hawaii-Hilo on Friday to remain undefeated after three games. The Beavers won 17-4 and 9-3; the first game was stopped after seven innings by the 10-run rule.
Darwin Barney, John Wallace and Koa Kahalehoe each drove in three runs and Barney, Mitch Canham and Jason Ogata had two hits apiece in support of winning pitcher Joe Paterson, who allowed an unearned run in five innings, with seven strikeouts, in his first OSU start. Canham and Drew George each scored three times.
In the second game, Jordan Lennerton had two doubles, a single and two runs; Barney had two hits and two RBI and Joey Wong two hits.
On Thursday, Mike Stutes, Josh Keller, Mark Grbavac and Jorge Reyes combined to pitch a no-hitter in OSU’s season opener.
Stutes struck out seven hitters in five innings. Keller pitched two innings, Grbavac and Reyes one each to finish off OSU’s first non-hitter since April 11, 1967, when Cleve Benson, Eric Selberg and Jack Humphrey blanked Portland 11-0 in Corvallis.
Canham was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI; first baseman Jordan Lennerton and outfielder Braden Wells were both 2-for-5.
The series concludes today with a 3 p.m. game at Kialua, Kona.
