Beavers overpower Stanford, NDSU

Gazette-Times

Oregon State wrapped up its dual meet season on Sunday by sweeping two meets at Gill Coliseum.

The Beavers defeated Stanford 31-13 in a Pacific-10 Conference dual, then followed it up with a 29-11 win over North Dakota State.

“Today was good competition going into the Pac-10 Conference Championships,” coach Jim Zalesky said. “We are a little bit beat up; we now have a chance to get healthy. We have two weeks to get ready for the conference meet.”

Oregon State (17-2, 7-1) earned its most wins in a year since the 1986 season.

Keegan Davis started the Beavers’ rally from an 11-3 deficit against North Dakota State (8-4) with a 6-3 decision at 157 pounds. That got OSU rolling to wins in the final six matches.

Oregon State dropped the first match against Stanford (6-7, 4-3), but then scored on its next three. Eric Stevenson wrestled two weights up and earned a pin at 141, and Derek Kipperberg scored a decision at 149. Travis Gardner had a pin in the second period at 197 to clinch the victory.

“I like the way Travis Gardner and Eric Stevenson are wrestling right now,” Zalesky said. “Overall the team is wresting well, we just need to shore up a couple of things in the next two weeks.”

Seniors making their final appearance in Beaver wrestling gear at Gill Coliseum were Bobby Pfennings, Jeremy Larson, Jamie Rakevich, Stevenson and Watterson.

The conference championships will be held Feb. 24-25 in Bakersfield, Calif.
