Former Auburn star Kellie Evans has been hired as an assistant coach for the Oregon State women’s soccer program.
The Brandon, Fla., native replaces Heidi Slaymaker. She left OSU after seven seasons to return home to Canada to pursue a master’s degree.
Evans last was a volunteer assistant coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., in 2006. She has also assisted in Florida’s ODP program and at Durant High School in Plant City, Fla. She earned NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping Diplomas in Dec., 2006.
“I’m excited about having Kellie join our program,” OSU coach Steve Fennah said. “She is a tremendous addition. She’s very energetic and has a very engaging personality that will mesh well with our players and our staff.
“She made a great impression on our staff and student-athletes during the interview process. The strong background that she brings from playing in the Southeastern Conference will add to the quality of our program.”
Evans graduated from Auburn in 2004 after helping the Tigers reach three NCAA Tournaments and win the 2002 Southeastern Conference championship. Evans set the school record for assists in a season (13) in 2000, and was second on Auburn’s career assist list with 30 when she completed her eligibility.
She was also an Academic All-SEC selection, made the SEC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and earned a TOP Tiger Scholar-Athlete Award.
“Coming from the SEC, I have a lot of respect for the Pac-10,” Evans said. “This is a great program and the athletic department is moving in the right direction with all of its success.
“When I met with people here, everyone was so excited about the future and I’m looking forward to being part of it. It’s a great opportunity to be part of something special.”
