Moon Madness

The night sky gave birth to yet another new moon Sunday night, begging the question, just who exactly is going to take care of all these moons? We certainly hope the government doesn’t expect us, the taxpayers, to shoulder the burden. Also, there are the questions of overcrowding among the heavens, depletion of celestial resources and whether or not stars are really good role models for a young moon to take after.

As many writers have posed bolder theories and questions about the sky’s coolest, most serene satellite than these, perhaps we should set our own aside for a moment and defer to greater minds. What follows, then, are some of the more noteworthy results of the moon’s tidelike pull upon the imaginations of humankind.

“There are essential and inessential insanities. The latter are solar in character, the former are linked to the moon. ... It was a moon that could stir wild passions in a moo cow. It was a moon that could bring out the devil in a bunny rabbit.”

Tom Robbins, author, from “Still Life With Woodpecker”

“Every one is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody”

Mark Twain, author

“All that is now/ All that is gone/ All that's to come/ and everything under the sun is in tune/ but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.”

Roger Waters of Pink Floyd from “Eclipse” off of “Dark Side of the Moon”

“The moon is the first milestone on the road to the stars.”

Arthur C. Clarke, author of “2001: A Space Odyssey”

“A rat done bit my sister Nell (with Whitey on the moon)/ Her face and arms began to swell (and Whitey's on the moon)/ I can't pay no doctor bill (but Whitey's on the moon)/ Ten years from now I'll be payin' still (while Whitey's on the moon).”

Gil Scott-Heron, poet and musician

“The moon's turned black; For I love him, and He didn't love back”

Dorothy Parker, writer

“When a finger points to the moon, the imbecile looks at the finger”

Ancient Chinese proverb

“On the moon, Meatwad, we have advanced beyond rules and manners.”

Ignignokt, Mooninite from “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”
