Oregon State men’s soccer volunteer coach Gary Hamel has left to take a position as a full-time assistant coach at Fort Lewis College, an NCAA Division II power located in Durango, Colo.
Fort Lewis won the 2005 NCAA Division II championship and was the runner-up in 2006. Hamel will be working for first-year coach Tim Hankinson, who previously served as a head coach in Major League Soccer.
“We are very proud of Gary and we appreciate all the hard work and selfless dedication he gave to our program and players,” OSU coach Dana Taylor said. “Fort Lewis is very fortunate to have a coach of his ability and character. This is a tremendous opportunity for Gary and his family. He will continue to grow and develop as a coach and will make many contributions to the Fort Lewis program. It will be quite difficult to replace Gary as he became a valuable member of our staff.”
Hamel worked with the Beavers for one season, assisting in many day-to-day activities including fitness and warmups. He also helped direct OSU’s soccer camps and academies.
“I’m excited to continue to work in the college realm, and I feel well-prepared for this challenge,” Hamel said. “I am proud to have been a part of OSU soccer for the last 18 months.”
Before coming to OSU, Hamel was a coach in the Bend United Soccer Club and Central Oregon Soccer Association. He also coached at Bend High, Summit High and Sunriver Preparatory School.
