Eric Anderson, 15, of Corvallis was presented the Eagle Scout award at a Court of Honor on April 16 at Zion Lutheran. He is a member of Troop 258, lead by Scoutmaster Ron Griffing and assistant Scoutmaster Stephan Olcott.
Anderson, a freshman at Corvallis High School, planned, organized and supervised the construction and installation of a play structure.
He is the son of Daryl and Leslie Anderson.

Twenty members of the Philomath Future Business Leaders of America chapter participated in the Oregon FBLA State Business Leadership Conference in Portland in early April. Chambers to receive White Rose Award
Karla Chambers of Corvallis will receive the White Rose Award on May 16 at the 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee White Rose Luncheon, “A Salute to Women of Achievement.” The White Rose recognizes outstanding women in Oregon, based on volunteerism, professional excellence, commitment to improving the status of women in the region and contributions to the community as a whole.
Chambers is a farmer, innovator, successful business woman and community leader. She has co-owned Stahlbush Island Farms for more than 20 years.
Two Corvallis students win poetry honors
Two Corvallis students won honorable mention in the Oregon State Youth Poetry contest, sponsored by the Oregon State Poetry Association. The two sixth-graders from Cheldelin Middle School are Damien Armatas, who won for his poem, “The Poem I don’t Want to Write,” and Matherin Langley won for “My Brain.”
Winning poems will be published in the 2007 edition of “Cascadia: The Oregon Student Poetry Anthology.”
Long named to dean’s list
Kyle Long, a senior in the Kogod School of Business at American University majoring in business administration, was named to the fall 2006 dean’s list. Long is a native of Corvallis. He attained a 3.5 grade point average or better to be named to the list.
Math Olympics held in Adair Village
Third- through eighth-grade students from around Oregon gathered at Santiam Christian School in Adair Village on April 20 to participate in the Association of Christian Schools International Math Olympics. Twelve schools participated.
Local first place winners include: Rebecca Thompson, third grade computation; Dennis Li, fourth grade computation; Andy Han, sixth grade computation; Matthew Bolden, sixth grade reasoning; Derek Wong, eighth grade reasoning. All attend Santiam Christian School.
Lee awarded scholarship
Ryan Lee, a senior at the University of North Dakota John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, was awarded a $1,000 Lowell and Marjorie Swenson Aviation Endowment Scholarship. Lee is from Corvallis and has a 3.8 GPA, while working on a double major in aviation management and commercial aviation. He is a member of the president’s honor roll and the dean’s list. His career goal is to fly a 777 for a major airline.
Salsa team wins international award
Rumbanana Salsa Group of Corvallis took first place in the 2007 International Rueda de Casino competition in Vancouver, B.C., on April 22.
The team won after two rounds of dancing and a tie-breaker for the top spot.
Students win in U.S. Army competition
Three ninth-graders from Philomath High School received a “Benefit to the Community” award at this year’s national eCYBERMISSION competition. Each team member will receive a $2,000 savings bond and certificate of appreciation from the U.S. Army.
The Philomath students are Kendall Dye, Rena Sapon-White and Anne Wynn, led by team advisor Alice Eldridge. They were recognized for their work on researching, testing and educating their school on the threat and prevention of the Staphylococcus auerus, a common bacteria causing life-threatening infection.
Library employees receive awards
Oregon Library Association honored Corvallis-Benton County Public Library employees and supports with several awards at its annual conference in Corvallis.
Teresa Landers, deputy library director, was named Oregon Librarian of the Year. She also won the OLE Award, which is presented by OLA’s Public Library Division to an individual who has displayed exceptional effort and excellence.
Librarians Andrew Cherbas and Heidi Weisel won the OYEA Award for outstanding services to young adults.
The Library Supporter of the Year Award went to Freda Vars and to Reading Education Assistance Dog (READ) teams.
4-H fashionistas honored at revue
A number of local 4-H students were honored during a Fashion Revue on April 14 at LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University. The following 4-H members received honors during the event:
Seniors: champion, Megan Collins of Monroe; reserve champion, Marjorie Mahn of Corvallis; judges choice, Christianne Butler of Philomath.
Intermediate: champion, Sarah Hazleton of Corvallis; reserve champion, Devin Lowrey of Corvallis; judges choice, Kaitlyn Giessinger of Albany, Olivia Queen of Corvallis and Annie Coleman of Philomath.
First Year Junior: champion, Casey Lowrey of Corvallis; reserve champion, Sequoia White of Corvallis; judges choice, Laura Queen of Corvallis, Michelle Giessinger of Albany and Acacia Trevathan of Corvallis.
Altrusa Club founders honored
The Corvallis Altrusa Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in early April with a dinner at the Corvallis Country Club. Two Altrusa Club founders, Helen Hansen and Jean Mater, were honored for their 50 years of service to the Corvallis Club, which was organized in 1956.
Corvallis native heads to Korea on Fulbright
Maia Hoover, a senior at Willamette University, has received a Fulbright grant to spend a year in South Korea as an English teacher. Born in South Korea and raised in Corvallis, Hoover graduated from Corvallis High School in 2003.
She is one of two Willamette students to go to South Korea on a Fulbright this summer.
Lobbyist recognized
Bill Garber, 32, formerly of Corvallis, was awarded a “Top 40 Under 40,” award from the Title Report.
Garber is in the settlement services industry and is Director of Government Affairs for the Appraisal Institute, Washington, D.C., where he advocates before Congress and federal agencies on behalf of Appraisal Institute members. He is the son of Sharon and Bill Garber of Corvallis.
