CORVALLIS — Los Angeles-based comedian Rajiv Satyal, the so-called “Funny Indian,” is coming to town for one performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, 2945 N.W. Circle Blvd. The event is sponsored by the Foundation for the Arts and Sciences of the Indian Sub-Continent (FASIS), an organization that promotes Indian arts and culture in Corvallis.
Although Satyal was born in Ohio, his parents are from India, and he was steeped in their culture at home. Much of his humor stems from his experiences as a person of Indian ancestry growing up in a predominantly white Midwestern community. Satyal believes in promoting diversity through a mild dose of political incorrectness. His topics range from pop culture to terrorism, soap, being single, road rage, ethnicity and just about anything else that his audiences can relate to.
Satyal has opened for such well-known comedians as Kevin Nealon, Kevin James, Dave Chappelle and Russell Peters. Peters, himself Indian, has called Satyal “one of two Indian comics in the U.S. to watch.”
Opening for Rajiv Satyal on May 12 will be Corvallis humorist and motorcycle enthusiast Paul Turner, who is also known for bringing art cinema to the area via his Avalon Cinema and the Darkside Cinema.
Tickets for the May 12 show are $15, and can be purchased online at www.fasis.org or at Grass Roots Books & Music, 227 S.W. Second St. For more information, call 908-4003. To learn more about Rajiv Satyal, go to his blog at www.funnyindian.com.
