Johnson builds 3-stroke lead

Gazette-Times

PORT ST. LUCIA, Fla. — Vincent Johnson separated himself from the field in the second round of the Men’s Independent Division at the 21st PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship on Saturday.

The Oregon State junior will finish the tournament today. He will play in the same group as Steven Frazier of Houston. Johnson leads Frazier by three strokes.

Johnson shot an even-par 72 on Saturday at the PGA Golf Club. He finished an outstanding day with three birdies and was only set back by a bogey on the 14th and a double-bogey on the 15th hole.

“I was actually playing better than (Friday), but I got to the 14th and bogeyed and doubled on the next hole,” Johnson said. “I felt like I salvaged today and got some momentum going into (today) when I birdied the 17th hole, the toughest hole on the course.”
