The Oregon State men’s crew team will compete at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships for the 13th season in a row today through Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
“Thirteen consecutive bids is a great accomplishment,” coach Steve Todd said. “It means the program continues to move in the right direction. We are continuing to develop talent and put out boats that are capable of competing at the highest level of men’s collegiate rowing.”
The IRA Championships are the men’s crew equivalent of the NCAA championships, as the NCAA doesn’t hold a national-championship meet for men.
The Beavers hope to improve on last year’s 14th-place finish. Nine of the previous 12 OSU teams have placed in the top 10 at IRAs.
Knights additions
Cal Poly sophomore third baseman Brent Morel will join the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League on July 1 after rehabbing an injured shoulder.
He was the team’s MVP in 2006 (.284, 1-21) and was a Big West Conference honorable-mention all-star in 2007 after hitting .332 with five homers and 31 RBIs.
Infielder Nick Akins of California’s Riverside Community College will be able to play this year after clearing up some academic issues. He was selected by the Dodgers in the 13th round of the 2006 draft but did not sign.
Allenby honored
OSU junior golfer James Allenby was selected to the Golf Coaches Association of America/PING All-Pacific Region team. Allenby set a school record for single-season scoring average of 71.59, nearly a full stroke better than the previous record.
He was Pac-10 honorable mention, placed 14th at the Pac-10 Championships and 10th at the NCAA West Regional.
Canham all-academic
Catcher Mitch Canham was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Baseball Team as a first-team selection.
He is a junior majoring in business administration.
Softball players honored
Natalie Johnson, Sherina Galvan, Mia Longfellow, Ta’Tyana McElroy, Cambria Miranda and Paige Lowe were members of the Pac-10 softball all-academic teams.
McLemore demoted
Former OSU left-handed pitcher Mark McLemore (2000-02) was sent back to triple-A Round Rock in Texas by the Houston Astros. He was recalled last week and pitched one inning of scoreless relief in his brief stint with the Astros.
OSU alumni
Former OSU tight end Tim Euhus (1999-2003) signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Former OSU linebacker Jonathan Jackson (1996-99) signed with the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League and was assigned to the practice squad.
