Riley waiting to make decision

CORVALLIS — After the final scrimmage of training camp for the Oregon State football team, coach Mike Riley held off any decisions at quarterback and backup running back.

There were some developments, however, before the Saturday afternoon workout. Senior All-American wide receiver Sammie Stroughter made a brief stop in Reser Stadium.

He sat in the stands and appeared tired. Teammates tried to speak with him, but he made little contact. Stroughter has been away from the team dealing with personal issues for 11 days.

Riley spoke with Stroughter before he left. Afterward Riley said he doesn’t know when Stroughter will return to the team.

When asked if OSU is proactively helping him return, Riley said it’s up to Stroughter.

As for the scrimmage, it was another tune-up for the defense. If quarterback sacks counted it would have been a defense-dominated day.

“I did not like our execution, just procedural stuff, the fumbles, the not getting the handoff to the tailback,” Riley said. “There were isolated stuff that I liked; we just have to put it together. Defensively, I thought we were sound and flew around.”

The offense did improve from last weekend’s scrimmage. There were no interceptions this time by quarterbacks Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao.

Canfield worked mostly with the first string and completed 6 of 13 for 77 yards and a touchdown. Moevao was 17-for-33 for 213 yard and two TDs, but it was mostly with the second string.

“I’m not reading into that,” Moevao said. “Whatever offense is out there, I try to do the same thing. I try to execute what I’m supposed to do. Whenever coach feels he’s ready to make that decision, I’m ready to be behind him 100 percent.”

Both quarterbacks started out slow, but improved as the day went on.

Canfield hit Anthony Brown on a 41-yard touchdown pass. Moevao connected with Darrell Catchings for a 16-yard score and Gabe Miller on a 1-yard pass.

“The timing with the QBs is coming together,” Brown said. “As camp goes on, the timing gets better. We’re not worried about who the starter is. We just try to help the coaches out by trying to get open for the quarterbacks.”

As for a decision, Riley said maybe early in the week or mid-week.

“They are not helping me that way,” Riley said of their inconsistencies. “I’m not worried about this. We’ve taken our time. We’ll come up with the right answer. This will ultimately turn out well for the Beavers with the development of these quarterbacks. There are positives here. This is not going to be a dilemma for the Beavers.”

None of the running backs stood out, but Ryan McCants, Ahmed Mokhtar, Patrick Fuller and Matt Sieverson received a near-equal share of the carries.

Riley plans to deliberate on that position over the weekend, and still hopes to redshirt the freshmen, McCants and Mokhtar.

“We’ll look hard at the video,” Riley said. “That’s what I’m going to do in the next 24 hours, and talk to our coaches. We’ve been very impressed with McCants. We have to decide what we are going to do with that. He’s talented. And he’s definitely in that picture. We have to feel good about another guy being the backup, and keep Ryan on an alert for playing. If we activate him right away remains to be seen.”

Several of the key players sat out most, if not all, of the scrimmage to rest minor bumps and bruises.

Freshman cornerback David Ross (quad) was on crutches. And sophomore receiver Casey Kjos (hip) was in street clothes.
