WHO’S HOT
Mike Riley
The Oregon State coach coaxed a young offense that has been torn apart by injuries into bowl eligibility with two games left. It also adds a year to his contract, so there’s still six more after this season.
WHO’S NOT
Tyrone Willingham
The Washington coach wrapped up his third straight losing season in three years with the Huskies. His last winning season was 2004 with a 6-5 record at Notre Dame.
TURNING POINT
Gerard Lawson blocked a punt and Dennis Christopher recovered the ball and returned it 7 yards for a touchdown to put the Beavers up 13-0 with 7:58 left in the first half.
KEY STAT
6
The Beavers won their sixth game this season. That makes them bowl eligible. With the way the season has gone for the Pacific-10 Conference, it almost assures them of a bowl game. Another win will lock it up.
TRENDS
The Beavers have won four straight games against the Huskies, and five of the last seven. Washington still leads the overall series 57-31-4.
EJECTIONS
Four players were ejected due to late shoves and punches in the third quarter. They were Washington’s OG Ryan Tolar, OSU’s CB Brandon Hughes, S Bryan Payton S James Dockery.
STARTING STREAK
Roy Schuening started at right tackle instead of his usual right guard position, but the senior is still on pace to hold the OSU record for the most consecutive starts. He has made 47 since his freshman season began. He’ll tie Richard Seigler at Washington State next weekend and beat it Dec. 1 in the Civil War.
RECORD CROWD
The 45,629 people who watched the game was a record crowd. The gathering beat the previous mark of 44,015 set last year against Oregon. This was not the first sellout after the latest stadium expansion that happened in the offseason. The new capacity is 45,674.
GOOD START
The Beavers continued their mastery over the first quarter. They have outscored opponents 92-9 in the opening quarter after this game. They have allowed only three field goals to three different opponents. No team in Division I has given up fewer points.
BIG HIT
Washington QB Jake Locker was knocked out of the game and taken to the hospital with 6:18 left in the first half. He was hit in the back of the head by S Al Afalava’s face mask. Carl Bonnell replaced him.
RECRUITING
Sprague High LB Tony Wilson verbally committed to the Beavers. He’s a 6-foot-1, 215-pounder.
