Uniform choice is hardly uniform now

When it comes to a University of Oregon football game the matter of uniforms has to come up.

And now Oregon State has become part of the discussion with the Beavers’ new sports bra look.

So what colors will the Beavers be wearing on Saturday in the Civil War at Autzen Stadium? The orange and black combo has worked in home games and is popular with the players.

“I got out of that after the first conversations and left it to our equipment guy to figure that out,” coach Mike Riley said Tuesday. “Right now we are wearing white. I think they are trying to find out if we can wear our orange. That would be unique down there, I suppose. But when they start talking about it I’ll just see what we are wearing at the game.”

Visiting teams usually have the option as to what color to wear. It’s a tradition that the home team wears dark and the visiting team wears white, but not a rule.

OSU team captains have a big say in the uniform choice and senior defensive end Jeff Van Orsow said it will be either the white or orange jerseys.

“Right now it’s on the athletic directors,” Van Orsow said. “The coaches from both schools don’t care. (Oregon coach Mike) Bellotti doesn’t care because we allowed them to wear their yellow uniforms here last year.”

Imagine OSU orange next to Oregon’s yellow.

Possible opponent

If the Beavers are invited to play in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas, they would face South Florida. The Bulls accepted their invitation Tuesday.

South Florida closed the season with three straight wins and has a 9-3 record, 4-3 in the Big East Conference. The Bulls upset a West Virginia team that may play for the national title.

The Sun Bowl pairs the third pick from the Pacific-10 Conference against a Big East or Big 12 team. Depending on how other games play out this weekend the Beavers could be in the Holiday, Sun or Emerald Bowls.

No Bernard

Staring tailback Yvenson Bernard stayed away from practice again while recovering from last week’s minor knee surgery.

“It’s never as fast as we would like to see it happen,” Riley said of his recovery. “It’s not as far along as we thought it might be. It’s day-to-day, and we’ll see where he is.”

Clinton Polk and Matt Sieverson continue to share the ball carrying load in practice. They’ve successfully filled in when Bernard has been hurt this season.

“If he’s ready by the time the game comes around, I would not be concerned with him about missing practice,” Riley said.

Other injuries

OG Jeremy Perry (leg) and DE Dorian Smith (knee) are expected to play, but probably won’t start, Riley said. Perry, however, was running with the first string in practice. … LB Derrick Doggett (wrist) has returned to practice after resting during the bye week.
