Locals to protest Gitmo detentions

The Corvallis chapter of Veterans for Peace is organizing a protest Friday to mark the sixth anniversary of the imprisonment and torture of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Protesters are invited to gather at noon in front of the Memorial Union at Oregon State University, in solidarity with at least 70 protests that will be held Friday by Amnesty International and other groups around the world.

Joseph Orosco, associate professor of philosophy and director of OSU’s Peace Studies program, will speak at the event, which is co-sponsored by the OSU College Democrats, OSU Faculty and Staff for Peace and Justice, as well as Albany Peace Seekers.

The protest will be held rain or shine, although a real deluge would see the event moved to the Memorial Union Lounge.

Although dozens of Guantanamo “Orange Friday” events will be held in the United States, France, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Hungary and Poland, the Corvallis protest is the only one planned in Oregon.
