ADAIR VILLAGE - Demetri and Derek Howerton combined to shutdown Waldport’s Jeff King and Santiam Christian High raced off with a 56-34 PacWest Conference boys basketball victory on Friday.

King entered the game averaging about 27 points a game. He had two in the first half when the Eagles (13-2, 4-1) seized a 26-9 lead.

SC held Waldport to two points in the second quarter.

“It was a great job by our guys to recognize” where the ball was going, SC coach Ron Sisler said. “It was kind of one of those games where we were able to contest every shot that they took.”

As a result, the Eagles had 43 rebounds as a team. Seth Carey led SC with 14 points and 11 rebounds, his third straight double-double.

The Howerton twins both had 11 points. King scored 14 in the fourth quarter.

MONROE - Sal Rubio led Monroe to a Mountain View Conference victory over Glendale with 21 points. Adam Opoien had 17 and Drew Hubbard added 14. A 24-point third quarter sparked the Dragons (5-9, 2-2).

ADAIR VILLAGE - Santiam Christian pulled away in the second quarter then maintained its lead to claim a 58-45 PacWest Conference victory over Waldport.

Tayla Woods led SC (13-1, 4-1) with 21 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while Nicole Barton added six rebounds, four steals and six points.

After SC took a 24-14 halftime lead, Waldport played the Eagles almost even throughout the second half.

“Waldport picked up their game,” SC coach Melissa McLain said. “They’re scrappy, physical and quick. We were able to stay with them and respond a little bit.”

MONROE - Kim Thompson scored on a rebound in the final 20 seconds to lift the Dragons to the Mountain View Conference victory. Thompson finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Monroe (5-10, 3-1) rallied from an early deficit by playing tough defense.

SILETZ - Brittany Howard scored 15 points and Eddyville won a double overtime Mountain West League game thanks to its bench.

Eddyville (5-6, 4-5) was in foul trouble most of the game, and had three starters foul out. Two free throws by Howard and one by Marjorie DeoCampo in the final 20 seconds won the game.

REDMOND - Corvallis went 1-2 in the first day of the Oregon Classic, beating Pendleton 40-31. The Spartans lost to Madras 33-20 and Crater 41-19.

Bo Christianson won his three matches to run his record to 19-0 this season in the 152-pound class. He defeated Crater’s Brock Gutches 10-5. Gutches is a two-time state champion at 145, but moved up to face Christianson.
