Roy Sinnott, born in Osceola, Wis., on Aug. 18, 1922, passed away on Feb. 27, at the age of 85.
In June 1943, after Army training at Camp Roberts, Calif., in the 558th Field Artillery Battalion, Roy was shipped to the war zone in France and Germany. He joined General Patton’s 3rd Army Tank Corps and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned the Purple Heart and Victory Medal during his service and was honorably discharged Nov. 16, 1945. Upon Roy’s return to the U.S., he joined the Navy Seabees and was posted to Kodiak, Alaska, where he met his wife, Frances.
Roy and Frances moved to Albany, where he served as a police officer and later opened a gas station in support of his growing cab and bus company. In 1962, prior to his long career with Turf and Toro Supply, he moved his family to Seattle and worked for Metro Transit as a bus driver. In 1976, Roy went to work on the construction of the Alaska pipeline. While in Anchorage, Alaska, he re-enlisted and served in the Cargo Handling Battalion at Elmendorf Air force Base.
In August 1981, Roy retired from the Armed Forces of the United States of America after serving faithfully and honorably for a total of 35 years. For 30 years, Roy and Frances resided in Anchorage, Alaska, where they enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling in the motor home and playing cards. In September 2005, Roy and Frances returned to their Seattle home.
During his retirement, Roy enjoyed participating in various reunions of the 558th Field Artillery Battalion and the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni. He was also an active member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Roy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Sinnott; sons, Lawrence “Larry” Sinnott of Seattle and Russell “Rusty” Sinnott (Carlene) of Everett, Wash.; daughter, Barbara Sinnott of Lynnwood, Wash.; grandson, Justin Sinnott (Trisha); granddaughter, Kirstin Gerber (Peter) of Portland; great-granddaughter, Aspen, of Seattle; brother, James Sinnott (Millie) of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Marie Nelson (Ray) of Stillwater, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, at the McHenry Funeral Home in Corvallis. Interment will follow at the Eddyville Cemetery.
