Heyman earns top MWC honor

Corvallis High senior point guard Nadav Heyman was named the Mid-Willamette Conference boys basketball player of the year in a vote of conference coaches on Sunday night.

Heyman helped lead the Spartans to a 14-0 conference mark, their second straight undefeated regular season. He was also named the player of the year last year.

CHS seniors Nick Eason and Alex Hendrickson were first-team selections as well.

Woodburn’s Kurban Shamatov, South Albany’s Erik VanKuelen and Silverton’s Casey DePaolo were the other first-team picks.

Crescent Valley’s Thomas McCarthy and Logan Peterson were both second-team selections after helping lead the Raiders to tie for third-place. The Raiders are at Crook County tonight.

West Albany’s Will Murphy, South Albany’s Wes Bartz and Silverton’s Taylor Burton were also second-team selections.

CHS’s Cade Hearing and CV’s Colton Kelsey were third-team picks, along with Woodburn’s Andy Avgi, Dallas’ Joey Salcido and South Albany’s Josh Hacek.

Honorable mention went to South Albany’s Sam Knight, Lebanon’s Colton Hackstedt, Woodburn’s Jeremy Fackrell, West Albany’s John Braun, Dallas’ Jesse Boustead and Silverton’s Luke Ferguson.

CHS’s Greg Garrison was voted coach of the year.

Wrestlers honored

CHS’s Bo Christianson was selected 5A wrestler of the year after repeating as 152-pound state champion.

Christianson and Anthony Emmons have been selected to the Oregon all-star wrestling team that represents all six state classifications. They will compete against the California all-stars on at 6:30 p.m. March 15 at Southern Oregon University.

Volleyball opening

Corvallis High is looking for a freshman volleyball coach. Anyone interested should contact CHS athletic director Bob Holt at 757-5920.

Rugby starts with win

The Linn-Benton Lions rugby team started the 2008 season with a 46-12 victory over McKenzie this past weekend.

The Lions are a comprised of students from CHS, CV, West Albany and South ALbany.

The Lions had a strong first half with scores by Wyatt Ohlen, Jordan Galvin and three trys by Tevin Cheever, who also added three conversion kicks and a penalty goal, to take a 34-0 lead at the half.

Linn-Benton’s next match is at Ashland on Saturday. The Lions’ first home game is March 15 against South Eugene.
