Brookings, Marist gain semifinals (March 13)

Second-ranked Brookings-Harbor scored the last 12 points of the game on Wednesday in a 45-38 comeback win over seventh-ranked Hidden Valley in an OSAA 4A boys basketball quarterfinal game at Gill Coliseum.

Hidden Valley, of Grants Pass, scored its last two points on a Trevor Porter lay-in with 3:19 remaining to give the Mustangs (22-5) a 38-33 lead.

Brookings-Harbor (22-2) scored eight of the final 12 points at the free-throw line. The Bruins were 10 of 14 at the foul line in the last 4:20.

Hidden Valley missed the first shot of 1-and-1 bonus free-throw attempts three times in the closing minutes.

Fred Corpening had 13 points and five rebounds for Brookings-Harbor, which defeated Hidden Valley for the third time this season. The earlier scores were 47-37 and 53-36.

Kenton Bansemer added 10 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Bruins.

Earl Crawford had 10 points and six rebounds for Hidden Valley.

Brookings-Harbor, which has not lost to an Oregon team this season, moves on to play unranked Stayton in today’s semifinals. Hidden Valley faces Philomath this morning in consolation action.

Marist 61, La Grande 45

Third-ranked Marist trailed only in the opening minutes of the Spartans’ upset of top-ranked La Grande.

Michael Murray’s two free throws with 5:13 left in the first quarter gave the Spartans (23-4) the lead for good.

Marist, a private school in Eugene, led by as many as 13 in the first half and had a 28-19 advantage at halftime. The Spartans went ahead by 18 in the second half, while La Grande (24-2) got no closer than 11 after Marist scored the first six points of the third quarter.

Gianni Carter had 17 points and David Berney and Dustin Waldron added 15 apiece for Marist. Waldron also had 11 rebounds.

Luke Kevan had 12 points for La Grande.

Marist will play unranked Newport today in the semifinals.

Newport 70, Phoenix 66

Jay Torland’s basket with 1:22 left in overtime proved to be the game-winner in Newport’s victory over Phoenix.

Torland’s shot broke a tie, giving Newport (21-7) a 67-65 lead. Phoenix (21-9) managed just one point in the final 1:40 of the four-minute extra period.

The game was tied 12 times and there were 21 lead changes. Phoenix jumped ahead 12-3 early, only to see Newport tie the game at 16-16 after one quarter.

Neither team let by more than four points from there.

Phoenix had the ball for the last 30 seconds of regulation but was unable to get a shot off before time ran out.

Newport’s Daryn Palmer had 15 points, leading four Cubs in double figures. Cole Skriver and Torland had 14 apiece and Travis Iverson added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Mike Shepherd had 24 points and 14 rebounds for Phoenix.

Girls consolation

Rylee Peterson scored 29 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Newport High girls basketball team as the Cubs dropped a 50-46 decision to No. 2 Cottage Grove in the consolation bracket of the OSAA 4A tournament on Wednesday.

Cottage Grove led 16-9 after the first quarter, but behind Peterson, the Cubs repsonded with a 20-4 advantage in the second quarter to take a 29-20 lead into the half.

But the Lions responded, outscoring Newport 30-17 in the second half.

Reed Levings had 19 points and Kaitlyn Kronberger 18 for the Cubs, who advance to play No. 1 Ontario for fourty place on Friday morning.

Ontario 73, Seaside 66

Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvil scored 28 points to lead four Ontario players in double figures as the No. 1-ranked Tigers advanced to the consolation finals.

Ontario led 51-49 heading into the fourth quarter but was able to use a 15-6 run to take a 66-55 lead with 3:34 to play.

Marla Olstedt scored 24 points and Ashley Mayfield 21 for Seaside.
