EUGENE — Terrance Jones banked in a shot with .07 seconds left and second-ranked Jefferson upset No. 1 North Eugene 53-51 in the quarterfinals of the OSAA 5A boys basketball tournament at McArthur Court on Wednesday.
Jones, a sophomore guard, had the ball on the left wing with time winding down. He slashed towards the basket, ran into defenders, and falling away, made a left-handed shot off the glass for the game winner.
Jones finished with 10 points, while Terrance Ross had six 3-pointers and 20 points and Kalonji Paschal had 12 points for the Democrats (23-1), whose only loss this season was to Oregon City, the top-ranked team in 6A.
Drew Laird made two 3-pointers in the final 1:08 for the defending champions, who trailed 50-45 late in the game.
But Laird’s fifth 3-pointer of the game made it 51-51 with 25 seconds to play, setting up the final basket by Jones.
Laird finished with 18 points for North Eugene (24-3), which lost to a team from Oregon for the first time this season. Markus Baker added 12 points for the Highlanders, while Brian Conklin, the 2007 5A player of the year, was held to 11 points and seven rebounds.
Thurston 62, Century 49
EUGENE — Drew Wiley scored 21 points and a strong second half helped No. 6 Thurston rally to defeat No. 4 Century.
Wiley, an Oregon-bound senior wing, scored 14 points in the second half. He also had nine rebounds. Tim Autele added 11 points, and Joey White scored 10 for the Colts (21-6), who are at the state tournament for the first time since 2002.
Chehales Tapscott led the Jaguars (25-2) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron McCaffrey added 17 points for Century, which was making its state tournament debut.
The Colts trailed 37-31 seven seconds into the second half when Tapscott hit a 3-pointer, was fouled, and made the ensuing free throw.
But Wiley answered with a three-point play at the other end, followed by his second 3-pointer of the game to knot it at 37.
A layup by Autele with 3:15 to play in third gave the Colts a 41-39 lead and they never trailed again.
A tip in two seconds before the end of the third by Wiley capped Thurston’s 18-3 run to close the quarter with a 49-40 lead.
Thurston will face No. 3 Corvallis on Friday in one semifinal game, while the Jaguars dropped into the consolation bracket, where they will meet No. 5 Hermiston this morning.
Sherwood 52, Mountain View 44
EUGENE — Connor Rumpf recorded 13 points and three others scored in double figures for Sherwood as the Bowmen defeated Mountain View.
Colin Wester added 12 points for Sherwood (17-10), while Travis Lutes and Ian Donovan scored 10 each. Rumpf also had eight rebounds.
Sean Dart led the Cougars (15-11) with 12 points — eight below his season average — and nine rebounds. Brady Brent also scored 11 points.
The Bowmen, who advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 1978, were the only unranked quarterfinalist in the tournament, as well as the only third seed remaining.
