An unexpected treat greeted kids at the Boys & Girls Club on Tuesday, when they ventured out behind the building to see a group of llamas and alpacas waiting for them.
The animals were part of a day-long celebration of the movie “The Lion King,” as part of the Boys & Girls Club’s week-long tribute to Disney films. An although llamas and alpacas come from South America rather than Africa, where the film is set, the kids didn’t seem to mind at all.
“I like this llama thing,” 8-year-old Apoorva Prakash said, as she marched past a black llama that was about three times taller than her. A cluster of kids hung around each llama and alpaca, pulling on their wooly coats and shouting excitedly.
Some of the animals appreciated it. Others were not so pleased.
“I got spit on three times and then another one kissed me twice,” Dylan Frizzell told a friend as he marched back into the building in high spirits.
“They’re really happy we’re doing something different,” said the club’s teen coordinator, Manny Lopez.
Lopez said many of the kids had seen llamas in local fields, but never up close. His son Vincent was holding the lead rope of one of the llamas, and was very hesitant to let go.
Clubhouse director Matt Fee said several staff members created the Disney-themed week because they wanted to bring more structure to events at the Boys & Girls Club during spring break week.
“We were lucky to have staff take the time to plan this out months in advance,” Fee said.
Tuesday started out with a screening of the Disney movie. Then, after the llama event, the kids lined up inside to get their faces painted with animal patterns.
Xia Sireix-Royston, 7, was one of the first in line, and she was soon transformed into a black cat. Her friend Angie Guardiola, 7, chose a reddish brown cat face.
Marcel Quenga sat down after getting a third eye painted on his forehead. He said his extra eye didn’t have special powers, but when his friend suggested he could see through walls, he agreed that it would be a pretty good power to have.
The rest of the day included a safari bug hunt, a dodge ball stampede, clay jungle animal making and jungle collages. Today’s activities at the Boys & Girls Club are “Aladdin” themed, and “National Treasure” and “The Incredibles” activities will round out the week.
