CORVALLIS — Experimental theater group Verbobala Spoken Video is set to arrive in Oregon for the first time for a performance at the LaSelle Stewart Center Construction & Engineering hall. The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17.
The group, based out of Cuernavaca, Mexico, and Tucson, Ariz., performs a blend of bilingual spoken word poetry and live, large-scale video projections. Although they perform frequently in central Mexico, this spring they have embarked on their first US tour.
“We’re performing everywhere from a street party in San Antonio to the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. So far the response has been great,” said poet and performer Logan Phillips. Joining Phillips in the group is Chicano video artist Adam Cooper-Terán and Mexican video jockey Moisés Regla.
“The idea is to sample everyday life like a DJ samples a record. Our pieces are basically big remixes, putting together voices and images from where ever we’ve traveled,” Phillips said. “The audience should come expecting something really unique. Digital storytelling in Spanglish isn’t nearly as common as it should be.”
The event at OSU is sponsored by the office of Student Affairs and hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Admission is free. Verbobala, which translates as “bullet verb,” is on the Web at www.verbobala.com.
