There’s no such thing as a walk-off homer from Cambria Miranda.
Oregon State’s senior second baseman blasted a one-out, seventh-inning homer over the scoreboard, dashed around the bases with her trademark, all-out sprint, and then disappeared into a sea of teammates celebrating Thursday’s 3-2 Pacific-10 Conference victory over Washington at the OSU Softball Complex.
Miranda’s 10th homer of the season was the 42nd of her career, was an unprecedented game-winner and was retrieved by her father, Lee, who watched the at-bat from the other side of the left-field fence.
“I think it was my first (walk-off)” Miranda said, laughing. “It was very fun, it felt really exciting.”
It came on a 1-0 pitch and was only the second hard-hit ball allowed by Washington pitcher Aleah Macon. She’d changed speeds effectively, several times catching hitters looking at third-strike changeups, until Miranda guessed right and further solidified her lock on second place on OSU’s all-time home run list.
“I was looking for a change; she was also throwing hard in and I was also looking for that upball because she’d been throwing me all riseballs,” Miranda said. “I saw the pitch, just swung the bat and it went.
“It went really high, I started running and I knew it was gone.”
Vanquished also was a nightmarish eight-game losing streak that eliminated the Beavers (27-30, 5-14) from NCAA tournament consideration. Their last win before Thursday was 3-1 over Oregon on April 18.
“We played well,” OSU coach Kirk Walker said. “We had a tough loss on Tuesday (1-0 at Portland State), we had a heart-to-heart about how you play, and obviously they responded.
“We had a good practice Wednesday, swung the bat a lot, and we did a good job today swinging aggressively.”
DeAnn Young’s infield single and Erin Guzy’s opposite-field shot off the third-base bag into left field drove in runs for the Beavers in the first. Guzy has six hits in her last four home games.
Winner Kelly Dyer allowed single runs in the first and second and then shut the Huskies (26-22-1, 5-13) out the rest of the way, with four strikeouts.
“Her only focus is to give us a shot to win,” Walker said. “She’s being very unselfish that way, not doing the ‘poor me’ about some of those losses. If she can keep that up, hopefully we can get another win out of this weekend.”
The Beavers conclude the season at 3 p.m. today and at noon Saturday against UCLA.
