Local OSU students receive scholarships
James Rice of Corvallis, a senior in agricultural business management at OSU; Shiann Ashenbrenner of Monroe, a senior in environmental economics, policy and management at OSU; and Mark Goracke of Monroe, a junior in agricultural business management at OSU, each received a $1,000 William P. “Chip” Harris Memorial Scholarship.
The funds are given to undergraduates who major in agricultural business management or environmental economics, policy and management. The students belong to the College of Agricultural Sciences.
OSU student receives full-tuition scholarship
Josh Zúñiga, a College of Business student at Oregon State University, received a full-tuition scholarship for the Human Computer Interaction master’s program at Carnegie Mellon University. The program is a joint venture between CMU and the Mathematics and Engineering Department at the University of Madeira.
An OSU senior, Zúñiga is pursing a management information systems option and computer science minor. He is an intern at Wah Chang through OSU’s Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program.
After graduating, Zúñiga wants to work closely with software users or start his own venture.
College honor roll
Scripps College, Claremont, Calif., — Sophia Herron, a resident of Corvallis, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif. Herron is a senior, majoring in European Studies.
College graduates
Laura M. Johnson of Corvallis is graduating summa cum laude from the University of Oregon. She was awarded two scholarships totaling $6,000 and will be a master’s student in education starting in June.
Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. — Joan Casey, daughter of John and Jane Casey of Corvallis, will graduate May 25 from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in bio-engineering. She is a 2004 Crescent Valley High School graduate.
Corvallis High grad earns doctorate
Oklahoma State University, Tulsa, Okla. — Amanda Matzke Van Sandt received the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences on May 9. She will begin a residency in pathlogy at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland on July 1. She is the daughter of Gordon and Mary Ann Matzke of Corvallis and is a 1996 graduate of Corvallis High School.
Crescent Valley graduates earn award
2005 Crescent Valley High School graduates Emily Chi, Jeff Gibb and Tyler Scandalios received the Dean’s Award for Service at the University of Oregon on May 17. The award is given to UO students who have made exceptional contributions of service to the university community, fellow students and the larger community.
UO honors Love Inc. for schools support
Love Inc. has been selected by the University of Oregon College of Education Alumni Association to receive recognition with a 2008 community award. Love Inc. is a coalition of churches, businesses and individual donors. It is being recognized for its community advocacy in providing school supplies for hundreds of teachers throughout Benton County.
The community award is presented by COEAA to a parent, community member or organization for contributions to improve the quality of life in the community and the educational climate.
First place fiddlers
Tatiana Hargreaves won first place in the open division at the Oregon Old Time Fiddler’s Contest on May 16 and 17 in Salem. At 13, she is the youngest to ever win in this division. Starr McMullen won first place in the adult division. Both fiddlers are from Corvallis.
CHS band members go to State Championships
Six Corvallis High School band members participated in the OSAA State Solo Championships at Lewis and Clark College in Portland recently. They are Jenny Flannery, oboe; Annika Gilray, flute; Brian McFadden, trumpet; and Stephanie Hao, clarinet. Jenna Miller, junior bass clarinetist, received first place in the champioships and Gary Breed, senior flutist, received fifth.
Scholarship awarded for water study
Christina Branham of Corvallis is the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship by the National Rural Water Association for the 2008-09 academic school year. This scholarship is awarded to children or stepchildren of the rural water association or its affiliated state rural water association employees. It is presented to help students defray the cost of tuition, books and/or room and board at an accredited institution of higher learning.
Only 20 scholarships are awarded a year after a rigorous selection process.
CVHS students win for journalism
Crescent Valley High School students Jess Byers, Kathy Lu and Teal Anderson all had winning entries in the Northwest Scholastic Press’ 2007-08 Publications Olympics. The contest for all Oregon high school journalists honored the students’ work in the Crescent Crier news magazine. All three entries were published in the December issue of the Crier.
Byers, a senior, won “Best in Category” for magazine cover design. Lu, a sophomore, earned an “Excellent” rating in news features for her story on foreign exchange students. Anderson, a junior, received an “Honorable Mention” in sports features for her article about the Raiders’ ski team.
About 1,350 entries from 42 schools were submitted in 25 different categories to the Publications Olympics, which is based at Oregon State University. The competition was judged by 38 industry professionals, with 720 award certificated issued.
