CVHS student receives scholarship

Tony Wu, a junior at Crescent Valley High School studying in Germany as an exchange student through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program, has been selected as a participant for one of the seminars of this year’s Telluride Summer Program with a full scholarship. The program takes place at Cornell University and is a six week educational experience for high school juniors from around the world.

Altrusa International educational awards

The Altrusa International Club of Corvallis recently honored six women with educational awards. Victoria Challe received the first annual Altrusa Continuing Education Scholarship and will use it for study at Linn-Benton Community College. Shirley Rubio received the Latina High School Scholarship and will also attend LBCC. Four OSU students from the Educational Opportunities Program were recognized for their outstanding academic and service work: Yanele Garcia, freshman; Blanca Cabrera, sophomore; Angela Vue, junior; and Gail Woodside, senior.

National Merit Scholarship winners

Catherine S. Gifford of Corvallis, Max P. Henkels of Corvallis, Joseph F. Junker of Junction City and Jonathan E. Valentine of McMinnville are college sponsored National Merit Scholarship winners. Gifford and Valentine each received a National Merit University of Oregon Scholarship, Henkels received a National Merit Whitman College Scholarship and Junker received a National Merit Arizona State University Scholarship. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Corvallis AAUW local scholarships awarded

The Corvallis Branch of the American Association of University Women recently awarded a $750 scholarship to LBCC student Debra Sinclair and a $1000 scholarship for OSU to Nicki Bezanson. Sinclair is a certified nursing assistant whose goal is to become a registered nurse. Bezanson is a psychology major whose goal is to work with law enforcement as a criminal profiler.

Elementary Chess Club medal winners

The Wilson Elementary Chess Club, under the direction of volunteer Terry Hekkela, recently named its top medal recipients of the season. In the beginner category, Hunter Kirkpatrick received the gold medal, Tanis Hoekstra received the silver medal and Ian Farrell received the bronze medal. In the intermediate category, Dhruv Rengarajan received the gold medal, Claire Hekkala received the silver medal and Eli Yoder received the bronze medal. At the advanced level, Carson Henke received the gold medal, Jesse Bracht received the silver medal and Berkley Noble received the Bronze Medal.

Murphy, Lamb receive Fulbright grants

Christina Murphy and Robbie Lamb received nationally competitive Fulbright grants to continue research started while completing their international degrees in biology at OSU. Murphy’s project in Chile will examine the effects of upwelling regimes on turf habitats which in turn affect competition between crab species. Lamb will be in Ecuador to work with local fishermen on developing sustainable fisheries though establishing and maintaining marine reserves.

College graduates

California University of Pennsylvania, California, Pa. — Sherry Sic, daughter of Chuck and Muriel Sic graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a master’s degree in social work. She will start work as a behavioral health clinician at an agency in Juneau, Alaska, on June 30.

University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Wash. — Ben Ahlvin, son of Eric and Linda Ahlivn and 2004 Crescent Valley High School graduate, received his diploma from the University of Puget Sound on May 18. He graduated cum laude with a double major in math and physics.

Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. — Kurtis Magee, son of Mike Magee of Corvallis and Juliette Vallejo of Corvallis, received a Bachelor of Arts from Hamilton College on May 25. Magee majored in chemistry and is a graduate of Corvallis High School. Magee graduated with departmental honors in chemistry.

Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn. — Emily Clark, the daughter of Kim and Richard Clark of Corvallis, graduated from Macalester College on May 17. Clark received a liberal arts degree in biochemistry and a nomination to Iota Sigma Pi, the national honor society for outstanding women chemists. Clark is a graduate of Corvallis High School.

University of California, Davis, Calif. — Julia Emenhiser, a 1996 graduate of Corvallis High School, graduated from the University of California, Davis School of Law with a Juris Doctor on May 17. Julia is the daughter of Marcia Emenhiser and the late Dr. Donald Emenhiser of Corvallis.

Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, S.D. — Jake Jeffrey Roy of Corvallis recently received a Bachelor of Arts in sport, exercise and wellness from Dakota Wesleyan University.

Corban College, Salem — Brenda Sue Hanson of Corvallis, Randy D. Robbins of McMinnville, Linda Kay Ballard of Monmouth and Anna Louise Burwell of Monmouth recently graduated from Corban College. Hanson earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology, joined the National Honor Society in Psychology and graduated Magna cum laude. Robbins earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration and was recognized for academic achievement. Ballard earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and joined the National Honor Society in psychology. Burwell earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology was recognized for academic achievement and joined the National Honor Society in psychology.

Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, Ga. — Flavia F. Pereira of Corvallis, a senior at Georgia Southern University studying exercise science, has been named to the President’s List for Spring 2008.

Rotary Student Athlete Awards

Dani Brenneman, Hannah Phelps, Steven Champman, Steve Ravlin, Sami Keim, Brad Nelson and McKennzie Redberg received the Corvallis Rotary Student Athlete Awards from Corvallis High School.

Zion Lutheran School eighth grade graduation

Zion’s Centennial Year eighth grade graduating class includes valedictorians, Ashley Rausch and Caleb Trammell. Christopher Koenig is salutatorian. Caleb Trammell will also be receiving the Christian Leadership Award.

Intel International Science fair winners

Elliott Chad Finn, Robert Michael Livesay and Hannah Rose Lorenz of Crescent Valley High School received the Fourth Place Grand Award for Team Projects and $500 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) for their project,“Development of a Rapid Assay Test to Identify Potential Sources of Salt Tolerance in Wild Oregon Strawberry (Fragaria sp.) Populations.”

Folk Club Thrift Shop scholarship winners

The OSU Folk Club Thrift Shop recently announced its 2008-2009 scholarship winners. Eleven scholarships of $2,100 are awarded to Benton County high school seniors who will be attending Oregon State University this fall and 11 scholarships of $2,100 are awarded to Older-Than-Average aged women from Benton County who will attend OSU this fall. A total of $46,200 was awarded.

Garity wins Kip Smith Young Writer’s Award

Dylan Garity of Corvallis High School won the 2008 Kip Smith Young Writer’s Award. He will receive a $750 cash prize. The award is in honor of Kip Smith, who wated to write on human rights and environmental issues before he died in a car accident. Started in 1985, the award is sponsored by Smith’s family and the nonprofit Poetry Enterprises.
