KEIZER — The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Class A Northwest League defeated the Corvallis Knights 9-2 on Sunday in an exhibition game before a crowd of 3,186 at Volcanoes Stadium.
Returnee Josh Hogan had two hits, and Dean Green of Oklahoma State and Oregon State signee Logan Lotti hit RBI singles for the Knights. Left-hander David Stilley of Washington State was the most effective of the four Knights pitchers, as he threw two scoreless innings of one-hit relief, with two strikeouts.
It was the Knights’ final tuneup before their home opener against the Spokane RiverHawks, scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at Goss Stadium. Corvallis swept its opening West Coast Collegiate Baseball League series at Kitsap this past weekend, outscoring the host BlueJackets 26-7.
“We are very pleased with our start,” Knights’ coach Brooke Knight said. “I’m most impressed with the quality of our guys as people, and that makes a difference.”
“It’s early, but we have a chance to be special this season. Our pitching was good and we obviously hit very well. We are looking forward to getting home to Corvallis to play in front of our fans.”
Spokane (2-0) was also undefeated in league play heading into Sunday night’s game at defending WCCBL champion Moses Lake. The series continues at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
The Knights conclude their first homestand this Friday-Sunday against Kelowna.
