Chintimini players join teens to play Hans Christian Anderson tale

CORVALLIS — “The Emperor and the Nightingale” will be performed for children at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 N.W. Monroe Ave. Six Chintimini Chamber Music Festival musicians and a narrator present the Hans Christian Andersen tale, set by David Mullikin.

The program also includes a movement of a Beethoven string quartet and a Mozart Divertimento. The program will also be given in Newport on Friday evening, and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Alsea Community Library. The 40-minute concert is free.

Chintimini players involved are flutist Cathy Peterson, string players Sarah Knutson, Erik Peterson, Phil Stevens and Adam Esbensen, and percussionist Jeff Carey. The narrator for “The Emperor” is organist David Simmons, whose background includes opera, musical theater and radio. Joining the professionals in the Mozart piece are Corvallis eighth- and ninth-graders Ichigo Takikawa, Anne Wynn, Rachel White and Morgan Engle.
