AUDITIONS

“Play Ball” a.k.a. “Chicago” — Albany Civic Theater will kick off its 2008-09 season with auditions for “Play Ball,” also known as “Chicago.” Written by newspaper reporter Maurine Watkins, this is the wicked satire of crime and corruption in flapper-era Chicago that led to the hit musical. Director John Elliott is seeking seven women and six men for the show. Several actors will portray a variety of photographers, reporters, people of the court, policemen and other background characters. Auditions are set for 7:30 p.m. July 14-16 at ACT, 111 W. “Who Squealed on the Blind Pig?” — Flinn’s Community Players are holding open auditions July 14 for “Who Squealed on the Blind Pig?” Auditions will be at 7 p.m. at In The Lens Photography, 243 Third St. W., Albany. The play is a murder mystery set in Bill Beagle’s speak-easy in Albany during the roaring ’20s. The cast calls for about nine men and eight women. Performances will be Sept. 19-21.

CLASSES

Cuban Salsa — Registration is open for July’s Cuban Salsa classes. Level 1 is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, July 8-29, at Platinum. Ages 15 and up. Level 2 is 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, July 7-28, at Platinum. Participants should be comfortable with key motions such as Guapea, Enchunfla, Vacilala and Dile Que No before taking Level 2 as it builds on the fundamentals. Platinum is at 126 S.W. Composition, color theory, and various techniques will be covered in the class. A supply list will be given at the first meeting. All skill levels are welcome. Fused Glass Suncatcher — 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26, Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Ave. N.W. Instructor: Local artist Debby Scheele. Class covers how to work with fusible glass to create a tile or suncatcher. Cost: $20 for Albany residents, $26 for others. Lab fee: $15.

Creative Flower Power — 2:30 to 4 p.m. Mondays, July 7-28, Walnut Community Room, 4950 N.W. Fair Oaks Drive, in Fire Station No. 5. Instructor: Michelle Reed. Ages: 5 and up. Create cards and designs using plants and flowers. Storage techniques, project ideas and specific crafts are shared by experienced flower designer Michelle Reed. All materials are supplied, but students have the option of supplying their own materials for the final class. Cost: $40 for Corvallis residents, $50 for others.

Discover the Night Skies — Spend the evening learning about astronomy and viewing our night skies. Class begins with classroom time 7 to 9 p.m. at Corvallis Senior Center, 2601 N.W. Tyler Ave. Class session is followed by outdoor telescope viewing 9 to 11 p.m., weather permitting, at the Adair Aerodrome. Telescopes provided. Instructors: Heart of the Valley Astronomers. Cost: $5.

Family Climbing Time — 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, Indoor Climbing Center, Dixon Recreation Center, Oregon State University. For adults with children ages 4 to 17. Instructors: OSU Climbing Center staff Class opens with individual instruction, then parents belay children and participate in open climbing. For climbers new to our facility, a belay skills check is required and can be renewed each year. There is a two-child per adult limit. Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children.

Summer barbecue celebration — The Albany Senior Center is hosting a barbecue celebration with food cooked on a grill, dancing and music by the Bush Pilots. at 5:30 p.m. July 23 at the center, 489 Water St. N.W., Albany. The menu will include hamburgers, corn on the cob, baked beans and strawberry shortcake. Preregistration is required by July 16 and costs $8. Registrations after July 16 will be on a first-come, first-served basis and will be $9. Information: 917-7760.

Remote control aircraft — Learn more about the hobby of flying remote control (RC) aircraft: The Benton County RC Club is sponsoring free Trainer Nights on Tuesdays at the club field in Adair. From 5:30 until dusk, the field will be restricted to individuals interested in learning to fly RC aircraft. Experienced, volunteer RC pilots will be at the field for instruction and assistance. For ages 12 and up, no prior experience is required. Recommended equipment is a 40-size or larger, gas or electric RC aircraft and radio. Instructors teach using a “buddy-box” system, where they can connect to and jointly control the student’s aircraft, so student radios need to have a connection for that purpose. SUMMER CAMPS

Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis — Summer Day Camp at the Boys & Girls Club runs 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays until Aug. 29 and offers weekly theme-based activities for children in grades K-12. including arts, crafts, sports games and science. Summer day campers take three field trips a week to places such as Osborn Aquatic Center’s Otter Beach, OMSI, the Oregon Zoo and Evergreen Aviation Museum. Youth ages 11-12 can also take part in the Counselors in Training Program. The fee for full-day sessions is $150 per week, or $100 for just morning or afternoon sessions.

Camp S.O.C.K. — Southern Oregon Camp Kiwanis (S.O.C.K.) located at Camp Myrtlewood near Bridge is accepting applications for campers and volunteer staff for this summers camping session. Volunteer staff camp from July 13-18, campers attend July 15-18. Youth and young adults ages 12-20 that have physical disabilities can apply to attend the camp. Cost: $450, scholarships available. Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum — The air and space museum in McMinnville is offering a variety of summer camps this summer including including Aileron Adventure, Aviation in Motion, Aviation Academy Camp, Space X-plorers and Aerospace Challenge. Globetrotters Arts and Culture Camp — Registration remains open for The Arts Center’s culture camps for youth ages 6 to 12 years. Camps run 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Mondays to Fridays at The Arts Center, 700 S.W. Madison Ave., Corvallis. Cost: $200 per week for full days, $94 per week for half days. Activities include artwork, games and folktales from around the world with themes ranging from African cultures, Native American crafts to circus camp. Oregon Coast Aquarium — The aquarium is offering a variety of day camps this summer including Sea Survivors (Aug. 11-14), Undersea Adapters Camp (July 21-24 or Aug 11-14) and Youth Adventure Travel Camp (July 10-12). VOLUNTEER

Hallie Ford Museum of Art — The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University in Salem is recruiting volunteer docents to provide permanent gallery and special exhibition tours for Kn12 students, college students, adults and senior citizens. The next class for docents begins in September. Docents are asked to make a two-year commitment once they graduate from training. Applications may be picked up at the museum Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted by July 31 to Elizabeth Garrison, the Cameron Paulin Curator of Education.
