Self-publishing — A self-publishing workshop will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 12, Main Meeting Room, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. Sheridan McCarthy of Meadowlark Publishing Services, a Corvallis editorial services firm and book-packaging company, will offer a “soup to nuts” overview of the self-publishing process. Topics covered will be the advantages and challenges of self-publishing, a step-by-step tour of the process — from editing to design, production to printing — and a brief look at marketing strategies, sales, and public relations. Beginning guitar instruction and basic guitar technique, musical concepts and performance opportunities. Students must bring a classical or acoustic 6-string guitar. Learn foundational piano skills, reading and listening skills, geographies of the piano, contrapuntal skills and making music in ensemble form. No experience necessary. Summer hikes — Albany Parks and Recreation will offer three day-long hikes this summer. Participants can choose a hike or a photohike. The hikes, led by John Radetich, will be a longer trek focusing on sightseeing and physical activity. Photohikes, led by hiker and professional photographer Joel Zak, will focus on photographing nature and scenery while providing exercise. The hikes will be: Silver Creek Falls State Park, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 12; Iron Mountain Area, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26; and Breitenbush River Area, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Transportation will be provided. Participants should come prepared for unpredictable weather, wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, and bring water and a sack lunch. Trips will go rain or shine unless conditions are considered unsafe. Photohike participants will need a camera and equipment. The cost for hikes is $27-$28 for Albany residents, $36-$37 for others. Statewide Wine Competition — Amateur and professional winemakers are invited to participate in the 29th annual Oregon Wine Competition. Entry forms, fees and wines for the competition are due to the Oregon State Fair offices in Salem no later than July 10. OSU Summer Choir — Rehearsals begin at 7 p.m. Monday, July 21, in Benton Hall at Oregon State University and continue on subsequent Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. for the rest of the summer. OSU students can register for credit (University Chorale MUS 199/399/599) and community members may participate for a $15 fee. All levels of singers are welcome. Solo opportunities will be available. A final concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4515 S.W. West Hills Road, Corvallis.
