Knights finish sweep of Bend

For the second straight night, Corvallis shutout Bend 3-0 in a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League matchup.

The Knights (12-6) earned the series sweep in front of a record crowd of 1,632 at Goss Stadium.

“I just feel like we got back on track,” Knights coach Brooke Knight said. “We came out of the gate strong and then really kind of fell into a rut. It’s nice, we’re finally playing good, sound baseball. Baseball is all about momentum and we’ve got a lot of that right now.”

And it was fitting it was Oregon State players John Wallace and Logan Lotti who came up big for Corvallis on Thursday night.

Lotti’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning provided a much-needed insurance run.

With the Knights leading 1-0, Josh Hogan led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wallace. Lotti then hit a single up the middle to plate Hogan and give his team a 2-0 lead.

“It felt great,” Lotti said. “I was just going up there looking to tee off on the first pitch. It was right down the middle and I sent it right back where it came from.

“I got a little worried when it hit the mound because I thought it might kick out to the shortstop. But when it got through, I was so stoked.”

Corvallis added another run when Lotti scored from third on a ground out by Billy Clontz two batters latter. Lotti had moved to third on a single by Matt Wyckoff.

“They did little things tonight,” Knight said of Wallace and Lotti. “Wallace got the bunt down and then Lotti drove him in. Just the simple things like laying down a bunt paid off, and then Wallace makes a big catch in left field that was a big-time play for us.”

In the top of the sixth with a runner on second and one out, Bend’s Daniel Butler hit a shot to left and Wallace made a diving catch to prevent the Elks from tying the game at 1-1.

Wallace also drove in Corvallis’ first run of the game in the third inning. Alex Burg walked to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Richie Jimenez.

After Hogan flew out to center, Burg moved to third on a balk by Bend starter Kevin Hammon. Wallace then slapped a hit into right to put the Knights on the board.

The timely hits helped back up another strong performance by the Corvallis pitching staff. Five pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout while striking out 12 and walking three. Taylor Starr earned his second save in as many games for the Knights to end the game.

Starter Jared Eskew went 42/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.

“We got a solid performance out of Eskew,” Lotti said. “If guys get knocked around, we have a lot of depth to back them up. But Eskew pitched great tonight.”
