Knights lose 1-0, snap nine-game winning streak

Gazette-Times

KELOWNA, British Columbia — The Corvallis Knights’ nine-game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday night with a

1-0 loss to Kelowna in a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League game at Elks Stadium.

Kelowna’s Nathan Pickett, who was 0-2, 4.98 entering the contest, had only two strikeouts but blanked the Knights with a complete-game two-hitter. Kelowna (9-13) ended a four-game tailspin.

Corvallis (16-7) hadn’t lost since a 3-2 setback at Moses Lake on June 26 and had outscored its opponents 43-16 in the nine consecutive victories, four of which were by one run and three by shutout.

Knights’ starter Ryan Platt was on a pitch count and was lifted after five hitless, scoreless innings.

Kelowna then scored an unearned run off reliever Greg Bobnick in the sixth after a throwing error by first baseman Dean Green on an attempted sacrifice bunt moved Daniel Pellegrino to second, whence he scored on a single by Tony Nix.

Corvallis threatened in the eighth when Adam Melker led off with a double and stole third with one out. However, Green struck out and, after pinch-hitter John Wallace walked, pinch-hitter Josh Hogan popped out to retire the side.

Melker, who had the lone RBI in Corvallis’ 1-0 victory on Tuesday, had the Knights’ only two hits. They were retired in order six times, and the game ended in a brisk 2:15.

The series concludes at 7 p.m. today. Lefty Jared Eskew (1-0, 0.00) of Cal Poly is Corvallis’ projected starter, opposed by former Oregon State lefty Bryn Card (3-1, 1.93).

Card shut out the Knights on six hits over eight innings in a 2-0 Kelowna victory at Goss Stadium back on June 22.

The Knights open a three-game series at Bellingham on Friday night. Corvallis’ starter hasn’t been determined, but ex-Beaver Tyrell Poggemeyer (4-0, 3.06) is the Bells’ projected pitcher.

The Knights’ next home game is 6:35 p.m. Monday against Richey’s Market at Goss Stadium. All Richey’s season passes will be honored.
