The Buzz: What’s in your utility belt?

This is a big week when it comes to both local and national entertainment. The da Vinci Days Festival gets its rotor whirling from Central Park to Oregon State University as OSU’s Bard in the Quad series projects its silent-film-era aesthetic onto ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ Meanwhile, on the big screen, a strange pairing of films opens with the release of Abba-fueled musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ and new Batman installment ‘The Dark Knight.’

In a strange way, it all makes sense. There’s no greater fictional renaissance man than Bruce Wayne. He fights crime, he invents gadgets and he runs a multi-national corporation, while at the same time maintaining the facade of a hedonistic billionaire playboy.

And while Benny, Bjorn, Anni-Frid and Agnetha never stated, suggested or even implied it, Abba’s song “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” can certainly be seen as a musical Bat-signal aimed at the caped crusader. Right?

Anyway, for this week’s Buzz, we asked folks A) Who’s your favorite actor to play Batman? B) Who’s your favorite Bat-villain? and C) If you had a utility belt, what one item would you most want it to contain?

A) “Michael Keaton. He had kind of a sultry look, but there was that innocent look about him, too.” B) “The Penguin. He was by far the most disgusting villain.” C) “That wire you swing from building to building on.”

Michelle Summers, choral director, Sisters High School

A) “Adam West, of course.” B) “Jack Nicholson as The Joker.” C) “The bolo thing with the rope attached. That was definitely cool.”

Dave Trenkel, sales clerk, Happy Trails Records

A) “Adam West.” B) “Cat Woman because she’s so sinuous and sexy.” C) “A needle and thread. You can fix a fallen hem or put on a button.”

Jenna Logerwell, sales clerk, Many Hands Trading

A) “Michael Keaton. If for nothing else, he was Mr. Mom and Batman.” B) “Gotta be The Joker, Nicholson. He’s more campy and like a comic book than the new one seems.” C) “That little grappling hook thing that fires into walls, then disappears.”

Shawn Kilger, cook, Squirrels

A) “I liked that old Val Kilmer one.” B) “Arnold Schwarzen-eggar as Mr. Freeze.” C) “The grappling Hook.”

Reed Souther, dancer, Corvallis Academy of Ballet

A) “Christian Bale. I haven’t seen anyone else.” B) “The Joker.” C) “Some kind of inflatable boat in case you had to get away really fast.”

Maja Birdwell, student, Corvallis High School
